Abstract:

Currently the biodiesel industry is suffering from high feedstock prices and poor availability of virgin oil feedstocks. High FFA feedstocks of vegetable and animal origin represent alternative low-cost feedstock materials. These high FFA feedstocks are difficult to process using conventional homogeneous catalysts such as H2SO4 and up until recently, no viable solid heterogeneous catalysts were commercially available. Amberlyst™ BD20, a FFA esterification catalyst recently developed by Rohm and Haas, shows very high conversion and long lifetime.

Showcase 2:

Abstract:

Glycerol generation in the transesterification of triglyceride oils represents close to 11% of total production yield. The glycerol issued from conventional biodiesel processes has a high salt content, typically 5 to 10% after neutralization. There are many traditional markets for purified glycerol and new applications are emerging as glycerol availability increases. Conventional techniques for purifying glycerol such as distillation and classical ion-exchange may not be the most appropriate. The Ambersep™ BD50 process, jointly developed by Rohm and Haas and Novasep, is a low-cost glycerol purification alternative. It is a flexible process that ensures the most cost-effective solution to meeting a given purity specification.
